Anno ≈ 1596 — a daring feat in stone
De Waag (The Weigh House) on Nieuwestad in Leeuwarden is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. A weigh house was first mentioned at this location as early as 1483 — a place where goods were weighed and inspected for trade. The current building dates from around 1596 and has since undergone countless transformations.
On the back of this black-and-white postcard is a historical fact about De Waag. A card that tells a story.
